The head of the Ministry of Tourism Development, Carla López-Malo, affirmed that gentrification does not exist in Puebla, despite activists pointing out that it is occurring slowly in some areas of the capital and Cholula.
According to the official, this phenomenon has been prevented because Puebla taxes accommodation platforms like Airbnb.
“We are not yet experiencing this process in Puebla, however, we are already taking measures. In fact, digital accommodation platforms are included in the 3% withholding tax on accommodations, precisely to be able to monitor and guarantee greater fiscal equity,” she said.
In 2024, following the designation of San Francisco, el Origen, as Puebla’s first Magical Neighborhood, specialists consulted by Manatí explained that over the last 25 years, this area of the capital has seen increasing participation by private real estate players who have acquired properties for purposes other than those currently in use.
They also warned that if this trend continues, the displacement of the indigenous population could increase.
