At the end of July, sex workers will begin receiving medical services through the federal IMSS-Bienestar program, said Georgina Ruiz Toledo, president of the city council’s Security and Justice Committee.
In this regard, she specified that they are working with the federal Welfare delegation to ensure that this segment of the population has access to this type of medical services, as well as other social programs.
“We have an interesting federal program, IMSS-Bienestar, which will credential the entire population without discrimination, and access to healthcare should be available to all,” she emphasized.
She emphasized that a priority group for these types of benefits are women who engage in sex work; therefore, they will be served through various public policies and by all levels of government.
In this context, she stated that a meeting will be held this Monday with the head of the Historic Center Management, Aimeé Guerra Pérez, and the head of Public Services, Clemente Gómez Medina, to advance the issue.
She noted that since taking office, she has been in constant communication with the women who are dedicated to this trade, noting that they are working hand in hand with those who are based on 14th Street West.
The Council member commented that this administration works with all sectors and said that sex workers need to be made visible, because they do work like any other.
She specified that in the heart of the city, there are 2,000 people dedicated to this trade; however, a census will be conducted to obtain accurate data so that most of them can access these programs.
In addition, she added that with the aforementioned appointments, she will launch the Calle Vivo program, which is based on the dignification of public spaces, in addition to providing support to this population group.
It should be noted that a few months ago, the councilwoman and the head of the General Secretariat of Government (SGG), Franco Rodríguez Álvarez, inaugurated a mural on the aforementioned street with a group of women dedicated to sex work, as part of March 8th, to highlight their work.
Therefore, municipal authorities pledged to support them with the social programs offered by the municipal government.
