The Mexican Employers’ Confederation (Coparmex) Puebla issued an action protocol to combat and stop the crime of extortion affecting the productive sector, particularly micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
The organization representing the employers’ sector indicated that it is working in coordination with the Public Security Secretariat of the state government (SSP) on actions to combat extortion and provide businesses with tools for the prevention and protection of employees, as well as to encourage reporting.
According to data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP), from January through July 2026, 101 investigation files for extortion were recorded in the state of Puebla, of which 41 involved in-person extortion and 60 occurred through other means.
The cumulative figure during the first seven months of this year represented a 34 percent decrease compared with the 153 cases reported during the same period in 2025.
From this perspective, the employers’ organization emphasized that citizen participation and immediate reporting are key to strengthening investigations and combating this crime, which threatens companies’ assets and economic activity.
What to Do When Receiving an Extortion Call?
In the event of an extortion call, Coparmex urged citizens not to give in to pressure and to report the case to the authorities through official channels.
“In the event of telephone extortion, remain calm, do not shout or confront the extortionist so as not to reveal your emotions or give them more information.”
Likewise, the employers’ organization recommended that business owners always verify and report every case to prevent threats from being carried out.
“End the communication and hang up the phone immediately; extortion only works if you allow yourself to be intimidated. Verify and report, call your family member through another means to confirm that they are safe, and immediately contact 089 to file an anonymous report.”
