Firefly viewing season begins in Tlahuapan

With the aim of showcasing a unique natural spectacle in the municipality of Tlahuapan, the Puebla State Tourism Development Secretariat, in conjunction with local authorities and ejido members, presented the firefly season, which will begin this Saturday, June 20, and conclude in mid-August, depending on the rainy season.

During this period, the arrival of more than 25,000 visitors from various parts of the state and other regions of the country is expected, generating an economic impact of 6.5 million pesos, benefiting 17 properties in the Sierra Nevada mountains.

After emphasizing that this natural phenomenon can be enjoyed responsibly in Puebla, the Director of Tourism Products, Mayra Yvet Sotero Juárez, representing the Secretary of Tourism Development, Carla López-Malo Villalón, highlighted the conservation and maintenance work carried out by the ejido members of the region, in coordination with authorities at all three levels of government, to maintain sustainable tourism.

While the mayor of Tlahuapan, Rosiceli Díaz Hernández, thanked Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier for promoting firefly viewing, aiming to increase the number of visitors, who can stay overnight in cabins or camp in the ejidos (communal lands), as well as enjoy traditional cuisine and purchase various handicrafts and souvenirs.

For his part, the general director of the Pipirín Firefly Sanctuary, Joel Guevara, asked families to respect the regulations upon arriving at the firefly habitat, such as walking in silence, not wearing multicolored or fluorescent clothing, not wearing shoes with LED lights, not bringing pets, and having a raincoat.
