Sierra Negra de Puebla conquers Mexico with the country’s best coffee.

Coffee growers from the Sierra Negra region ranked among the country’s top performers in the national ‘Calidad en Taza’ (Cup Quality) competition. Their efforts to produce high-quality coffee were recognized, crowning the work of several generations of producers, noted Alejandro Flores, a member of the region’s coffee production chain.

The barista and roaster pointed out that they serve as the public face of the producers who supply the raw material, enabling them to transform a dry, green bean into an excellent product capable of delivering a beverage that stands out above commercial coffees.

The top rankings achieved by Sierra Negra producers place the Tehuacán region in the national spotlight as a significant area for high-quality coffee production.
He recalled that, in the past, many Tehuacán residents were unaware that coffee was produced in the region, as it was better known for corn harvests and other crops. However, in recent years, coffee has gained prominence thanks to the work of families who have trained in new cultivation, processing, and roasting techniques.

“All that effort has led to what we see today: a premium-quality coffee,” he stated.
Flores highlighted that these results are the fruit of work carried out over generations, allowing producers to secure top national rankings today. “It is an achievement for them, but also for the entire region,” he affirmed.

In the competition held in Huatusco, Veracruz, the municipality of San Miguel Eloxochitlán stood out the most. Julia Andrés Moreno took first place with the Abata variety. From the same community, René Hernández secured third place; Bernabé Rodríguez Herrera took fourth; Aureliano Romero placed fifth with the Marsellesa variety; Mercedes Gálvez Andrés took sixth; and Martina Dorantes Sánchez took seventh.

Second place went to Silvestre Fernando Castro, from the municipality of Ajalpan, who competed with the Typica and Bourbon varieties.

All of them have tended to their coffee plantations consistently and properly, enabling them to produce a high-quality product. In this competition, which featured producers from states such as Veracruz and Chiapas, the Sierra Negra region of Puebla managed to stand out at the national level.
