Construction collapse in Puebla leaves two dead and four injured

San Andrés Cholula, Puebla (December 19, 2020).- Two deceased workers and four injured, was the preliminary balance of the collapse registered on Saturday, December 19th, in a construction site located on the Vía Atlixcáyotl in this municipality of the state of Puebla.

The events were recorded after 4 p.m. when a loud noise was reported in the building of what appears to be a shopping plaza next to the Home Depot in San Andrés Cholula.

Six workers were trapped at the site, who until now was known to be masons, and were employed in a construction site located in one of the state’s highest-value areas. 

The rescue team of the Mexican Red Cross, Municipal Civil Protection, and agents of the State Police arrived at the place to carry out the work of recovery of the injured persons. 

When it was learned that there were two deceased, experts from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) went to the place to carry out the procedures to remove the bodies. 

Sheets were placed on the bodies of the two dead workers, while four more people were transferred to hospitals in the area for immediate medical attention. 

Until now, the reasons that led to the collapse of what can be seen from the outside as one of the floors of the building, which had been raised with steel and concrete structures, are unknown.

From a pedestrian bridge in front of the construction, members of the media and onlookers were able to observe the debris that covered the injured people.

The rescue work lasted for more than four hours due to the enormous weight of the collapsed structures, which required the support of the Puebla Civil Protection personnel and machinery.
