In a historic event, more than 100 thousand visitors attended the 2024 edition of the Traditional Barter of San Pedro Cholula.
At 6 in the morning, the activities began with the delivery of bread and coffee to the pilgrims who come to offer their products, from the Auxiliary Boards of Cholula, as well as other municipalities and states such as Oaxaca, Guerrero, Veracruz and Morelos.
Accompanied by councilors Fabiola Torres García, Sandra Hernández Romano, Sonia Tolama Zacatelco and Ramón Blanca y Pérez; the Municipal President of San Pedro Cholula, Paola Angon Silva, led the most emblematic festivity of the municipality, where she highlighted the importance of the Barter as a unique cultural manifestation in Mexico, which promotes economic and cultural exchange between pilgrims and visitors.
“This event allows us to preserve our traditions, while promoting the economic and tourist development of San Pedro Cholula,” said Angon Silva.
From 8 a.m., attendees began exchanging basic basket products such as rice, beans, oil, among others, to exchange them for crafts or other products from the region.
During the day, the municipal president of Chignahuapan, Pedro Lecona, joined this ancestral tradition, as part of the cultural and historical exchange between the Magical Towns of Puebla.
Around 4 p.m., the influx reached its maximum point, where visitors crowded the Plaza de la Concordia, the Cholula Fair and the Sanctuary of the Virgin of the Remedies.
To ensure the safety of the participants, the event had the presence of 170 elements of the Secretariat of Citizen Security and 50 Citizen Guards, who provided surveillance and support in coordination with local authorities, allowing the celebration to take place in an orderly and safe manner.
This year’s edition of the Trueque not only exceeded expectations in terms of attendance, but also generated significant economic benefits for the region.
Angon Silva thanked the residents of San Pedro Cholula for their active participation and the visitors for joining this ancestral tradition, highlighting the commitment of his administration to the promotion and preservation of the customs that make Cholula a unique destination.
With the record of historic figures, the 2024 edition of the Traditional Trueque reaffirms its position as one of the most significant events in the cultural and tourist calendar of Puebla, and as a benchmark for the promotion of Mexico’s intangible heritage.
