Warning of deterioration on Puebla roads: 50% require urgent attention

More than half of the highway network in the state of Puebla shows some type of damage that requires immediate attention, warned Jesús Ramiro Díaz, representative of the Mexican Association of Road Engineering (AMIVTAC), during a recent press conference.

Roads in critical and advanced condition

According to the specialist, between 8% and 10% of the state’s roads are in critical condition, showing deep potholes, severe deformations, and loss of asphalt. In addition, another 30% to 35% of the network shows advanced deterioration, with extensive cracks and subsidence that affect road safety.

The remaining deteriorated sections—more than 50% have been completed—are in fair condition: they are passable, but show visible signs of wear that could worsen if not addressed promptly.

Lack of Transparency in State Investment

Díaz pointed out that there is currently no clear public data on the amounts the state government allocates to road maintenance, which prevents adequate long-term action planning. He also emphasized that nationally, the Federal Government only covers 60% of the resources needed to maintain the federal highway network in good condition.

Intervention is Urgent to Prevent Further Damage

The AMIVTAC representative warned that road deterioration not only compromises the safety of motorists but also increases the costs of transporting goods and affects Puebla’s economic competitiveness.

“If we do not intervene now, sections in average condition will become damaged, and those already in poor condition will become impassable; the social and economic cost will be much greater,” he emphasized.

Proposed Solutions

Finally, AMIVTAC proposed a series of key actions to reverse this situation:

Make public budgets allocated to road maintenance transparent.

Establish preventive maintenance schedules.

Adopt innovative technologies to extend the life of roads.
