The state of Puebla has 12 Magical Towns that receive more than half a million visitors a year; however, four of these towns concentrate 70 percent of the arrival of tourists.
This is reflected in data from the Puebla Tourism Observatory, which aims to report the behavior of the main statistics on the subject during the third quarter of 2024.
More than two decades into this federal program, the entity has twelve towns with this distinction: Cuetzalan, Atlixco, Huauchinango, Tetela de Ocampo, Chignahuapan, Cholula, Xicotepec, Pahuatlán, Tlatlauquitepec, Zacatlán and the most recent ones, Huejotzingo and Teziutlán.
During the months of July to September, these towns together recorded the arrival of 561,544 tourists.
However, Atlixco, Chignahuapan, Cholula and Zacatlán received 389,146 people, which meant that seven out of ten of the total number of tourists who arrived in the towns that hold the designation.
This is the most visited magical town
The influx of people was mainly recorded during the summer vacation period. During this time, the most visited tourist centers and those that increased the most in visitors were: Zacatlán, with the arrival of 120,426 people.
This municipality has been part of the Magical Towns program since 2011 and is recognized as one of the largest producers of apples, gastronomy, crafts, as well as for its natural attractions and its typical cheese bread.
Chignahuapan appears in second place in visits with 83,898; from there San Andrés Cholula with 65,712 and San Pedro Cholula with 64,586, since they share the designation.
The magical town of Atlixco was in third place, registering 54,524 visits in the third quarter of this year.
According to the Tourism Observatory, visits to the twelve magical towns represented 32.53 percent of the arrival of tourists in the state.
August was the most representative month in terms of tourist arrivals, with 203,154 people and hotel occupancy rates above 44 percent; meanwhile, the average stay in these towns remained at 1.78 days.
