Chemical castration for rapists in Puebla: when will forums be held to discuss its implementation?

In Puebla, one of the initiatives of the current administration is to apply chemical castration to sexual abusers. For this reason, it is planned that open forums will be held in Congress so that citizens can be informed and, later, vote.

What do they say in Puebla about the forums?

In this regard, José Luis García, coordinator of the Cabinet of the Government of Puebla, confirmed that forums will be held in the months of February and March. During his visit to Congress, he indicated that the citizens would be the ones to choose about the initiative.

“We are going to start with the forums, (we) will listen to the citizens on the subject of the sexual inhibition initiative (chemical castration).”

What is castration and what does it consist of?

Chemical castration is a medical procedure that consists of administering medications to reduce the production of sexual hormones, mainly testosterone in men. Unlike surgical castration, it does not involve the removal of organs, but the use of drugs that inhibit sexual desire and ability temporarily or permanently, depending on the treatment.

In offenders, it is applied to:

Decrease the libido and sexual desire of offenders, preventing them from repeating sexual crimes. By reducing testosterone levels, it is expected that they will lose interest in committing new assaults
Some studies have indicated that chemical castration can reduce recidivism in sexual offenders, especially in cases where sexual desire is a key factor in criminal behavior
In some countries, chemical castration has been proposed as a less extreme option than the death penalty or life imprisonment for repeat sexual offenders, allowing them to reintegrate into society under supervision
Governments that have implemented this measure seek to send a deterrent message to other potential offenders, promoting fear of punishment as a strategy of social control
