Mexico registers record level exports to China

External sales to the Asian country were those that had the highest growth within the five main export destinations; however, its participation in the total is still low (1.9%); shipments of copper minerals stood out.

Mexico exported products to China worth 5.325 billion dollars from January to July, which represented a year-on-year increase of 32.9% and a record, according to data from the Ministry of Economy.

That amount also implied an increase of 40.1% compared to the same period in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.

Behind the United States, China ranked as the second-largest importer of products in the world in all of 2020, with 2.06 trillion dollars and a year-on-year fall of 1%, according to statistics from the World Trade Organization (WTO).

For Mexico, China is its third export market, surpassed by the United States and Canada (whom it will surpass if the trends continue).

China is today a great power in the world, a strategic indicator when it comes to imagining a new and diversified horizon of opportunities for our country, ”said Sergio Ley, former Mexican ambassador to China.

Taking into account the periods from January to July of each year, of all merchandise exports from Mexico, those directed to China comprised 1.9%, a greater portion than the 1.8% of 2020 and a historical maximum.

In the first half of the current year, Mexican exports to the Chinese market of copper minerals stood out for 1,857 million dollars (an increase of 67.4%), lead minerals for 391 million (an increase of 119.7%), and gearboxes for 132 million (an advance of 112.9 percent).

In 2021, Mexico achieved the opening of the Chinese market for Mexican sorghum exports and continues negotiations to conclude the sanitary protocols for pork and bovine viscera, as well as for the authorization of Mexican meat plants. In the same way, it analyzes with the Chinese government the access of Mexican fishery products.

Likewise, between September 1, 2020, and June 30, 2021, 15 farms producing fattening pigs from three companies located in the states of Sonora and Puebla were evaluated, being approved as eligible to provide Federal Inspection Type slaughterhouses ( TIF) authorized to export pork to China.

At the same time, the Mexican TIF establishments exported to the different countries with which they have commercial agreements, a total of 213,440 tons of products and by-products of animal origin of the species: avian, beekeeping, bovine, pig, horse, goat, sheep and mixed products. The main three destination countries are the United States of America with 38%, China with 24%, and Japan with 21%.

Pork shipments from Mexico to China were $ 119 million in the first half of 2021, a growth of 2.6%; at the same time, auto exports in the same direction totaled 148 million dollars, a decrease of 15.4%, at annual rates.

In the last decade, foreign merchandise sales from Mexico to China have climbed from 3,152 billion dollars in the period from January to July 2011, this is a cumulative increase of 68.9 percent.
